As a homeowner, you take on many electrical maintenance tasks. You have probably changed several light bulbs, and you may have even replaced outlets or light fixtures, but there are some things that you should do to protect yourself and anyone working on your electrical installations.

Shut Down the Power

Before you do anything related to electricity in your home, turn off the electricity to that area. When you are replacing a lightbulb, turn off the power to that room. If you have hired an electrician to work on a larger job, such as replacing wiring, outlets or other fixtures, turn off the power at the electrical box. Not only does shutting down your power protect the person working on the electrical project, but it also protects the wiring and fixtures in your home from damage.

Inspect Your Materials

If you are like most people, you may think that new products are inherently safe. However, even new products can have defects. Therefore, review the safety instructions and check each fixture to ensure that no wires are exposed, worn or otherwise damaged.

Get an Electricity Inspection

Before you install or replace any power component, you should have your system inspected. In fact, your home should be inspected regularly, every few years at least. Your inspector will look for fire hazards, improper electrical installations and other defects. They also look for code violations and ensure that your panel is working and components properly.

Work With Professionals

You may think that changing a light fixture or wiring a room is easy, but live wires are dangerous. Not only do professional electricians have the training to safely complete your project, but they know what materials, including wiring, sockets, outlets and even bolts, are safe for your home.

A licensed electrician can ensure that all your electrical installations are safe for you and your family.
